Review & Giveaway- Fight or Flight by Jamie Canosa
Keep your head down.
And look out for number one.
These are the rules Jay has lived by for the past two years. The rules of surviving life on the streets. But when Em comes bursting into his life, in all of her disastrous glory, the rules go right out the window.
Survive.Flee what’s been left behind
And never look back.
Em’s plan was simple. Though, it was easier said than done. The city streets are dangerous and unforgiving to a new arrival. Especially, a seventeen year old girl who’s never known anything but life in the suburbs. Sometimes, however, what’s lurking behind those white picket fences can be more frightening than any dark alley.
Both of them made the same decision when life got overwhelming—to run from their demons. Brought together by fate or circumstance, Em and Jay find the kind of love neither of them ever expected. But when those demons come back to haunt them and their love is on the line, which instincts will they choose to follow this time . . . Fight or Flight?”
My thoughts…
I’d seen a wee bit of inter web buzz about Fight or Flight, so when I was contacted by Jamie to join the blog tour I was pretty stoked and jumped on the chance. I’m so glad I did! I’m not really a contemporary romance fan, but this story grabbed my attention so I gave it a shot. I knew this was going to be an intense and emotional story when I saw the ‘letter to the reader’ Jamie wrote in the first few pages. It was a sincere plea that if the reader or someone they knew were being abused in any way, to reach out and get help NOW. It was just great to see an author truly put an effort into connecting with her readers.
This was a quick read for me, but that doesn’t mean it was easy or ‘light’ in any way. Fight or Flight delves into the reality of parental abuse, which to me is one of the worst things imaginable. To be hurt by those that are supposed to protect is just reprehensible. Emerson’s and Jay’s stories were very rough to read. Though Emerson’s wasn’t overstuffed with details, it was her reactions to people that really showed the horror of what was done to her, and what made me choke up a few times. Jay was a tough cookie, but it was so great to see that rough exterior soften as he realized Em could not and would not go home. I read this so fast because I HAD TO KNOW they were going to be okay. I remember putting my Kindle down at one point to go to sleep, and after about 20 minutes of rolling around and trying to get this story out of my mind, I gave up and turned the light back on.
I recommend this story to everyone. Yes, horrible things happened to the characters, but through them they learn they are strong, brave, capable of loving and worthy to be loved.
