“Hailey is an average twenty-year-old college student, living an average life. Or so she thought. When a past she never knew existed is brought to light, the reality she thought she knew is shattered and she is left alone to pick up the pieces. Who could know this world holds such evil? Who is this strange, obscure boy who seems to know more than he is saying? And what can one girl do when a fight to stay alive turns into a fight to avenge and protect the ones she loves?’

The Tree House is the thrilling first book author Shay Lynam, I am so excited to be one of the first handful of bloggers to have read The Treehouse! I know a lot of my fellow book bloggers would be leery of taking a chance with a first time self-published author without having any ratings to go by, but I am SO GLAD that I did! Shay Lynam is an extremely promising writer with an amazing talent for storytelling.

I read this book in two days, and that is quite a feat for me with having an almost nine month old daughter. There was so much tension and suspense, it was seriously hard to put down! The writing style was very relaxed and easy to read. I don’t think there was a single character that I didn’t like (unless they were bad guys, obviously). I loved how Hailey dealt with everything that went down. She was tough, but also vulnerable and kind. Jack was just the right amounts of snarky and sweet that made him likeable, and my heart ached for the reason behind his mood swings. The chemistry between them was great. Lynam is definitely not afraid to take risks. There is a pretty high body count for a story that takes place in the span of a few weeks, and let me tell you, I choked up quite a bit for a few of them. Even though it sucked because I was a little attached (which is a good thing), I loved that it made Hailey and Jack stronger, both individually and together.

The only issues I had were the few times when the location of a scene would change without any actual transition from the narrator. Not a big deal, but something I noticed. Two things I need to GUSH about are a) the cover, and b) the book trailer. The cover for The Tree House is PERFECT for the story. The black, gray and white of the alley make me feel like it’s ME running from the enemy! I don’t think I’ve ever had that happen with a book cover before, so it’s pretty cool. When Shay first contacted me for a review, she sent a link for the book trailer. I’ve been blogging for a few years now, and I don’t usually get pumped for indie book trailers. Usually it’s some animated weirdness with a sappy song overtop. Not the case here! My husband and I actually watched it on our TV, and we were super impressed with it. This trailer (posted below) must have taken hours and hours to film and edit. It was SO well done! Oh, and speaking of songs! There is a playlist at the end of the book, and I got really excited when I saw a couple of my favorite bands (Snow Patrol and Blindside)! I kinda want to be BFFs with Shay. Not even kidding.

Shay Lynam has so much potential. I loved this book, and I will be promoting it as much as possible! It’s available in paperback and eBook format (as of the date of this review, it’s .99 cents!). I’m not sure if The Tree House is a standalone or first in a series because the plot twist of an ending could go either way. Regardless, I am Team Lynam all the way, and will be eagerly awaiting whatever she has up her sleeve!
